Job Summary

This job will be filled at either the Utilityworker, or Sr Utilityworker level commensurate with the successful applicant's qualifications

Utilityworker

Performs entry level duties in the Operations area-Installs and maintains gas distribution facilities;  -As necessary, assists in construction, maintenance, street repair, installing new gas lines and performing plastic pipe fusion including electro-fusion on IHP services and mains (Possibility of working in a gaseous atmosphere in a fire suit);  -As necessary, operates a backhoe, ten wheel dump truck, pavement breakers, tamper and other equipment;  -As necessary, completes job related paperwork, records, changes to distribution piping system, including all records to verify material and footage for contractor payment;  -Completes Blue stake location requests when necessary;  -As necessary, responds to all emergency calls such as gas leaks, gas related fire calls, evacuations, asphyxiation and broken gas lines;  -As necessary operates required operations department equipment including, but not limited to, boring equipment, backhoe, ten wheel dump truck, service truck, crew truck and mini dump truck;  -As necessary, completes turn-on and turn-off orders for gas customers;  -As necessary, adjusts new and existing appliances
 
Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Sr Utilityworker

The company is actively seeking United States military veterans and service members who meet the qualifications. Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Utilityworker

The basic knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences that are required for entry into this job include the following:
-0-6 Months directly related experience
-General knowledge of tools and materials for repairs, maintenance and construction;
-Ability to see objects at close range and to determine the distance and relationship between objects;
-Ability to read instructions and write legible figures;
-Ability to read and understand basic maps, ;
-Ability to interface with customers and other company personnel;
-Ability to smell and detect burning materials, natural gas, hazardous substances such as solvents and toxic substances found in hazardous wastes.
-Ability to comprehend and apply basic math to add, subtract, multiply and divide; 
-Ability to lift up to 100 pounds; twist; bend; kneel and work in tight spaces.
-Must become company qualified on plastic pipe fusion after attending company schooling;
-Ability to follow company safety practices and policies.

Sr Utilityworker

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences that are required for entry into this job include the following:
- 6 months natural gas experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience;
- Basic knowledge of standard practices and safety procedures relating to gas installation and usage. 
- Knowledge of construction procedures and techniques. 
- Knowledge of gas appliance/equipment operations and repairs. 
- Knowledge of math with decimals and fractions. 
- Ability in the use of dispatching equipment such as radios, telephones and 
  computer equipment.
- Ability to pass required Operator Qualification requirements for the covered tasks 
  performed. 
- Ability to read and interpret basic maps. 
- Ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds; twist, bend, kneel, and work in tight spaces
- Ability to see objects at close range and to determine the distance and 
  relationship between objects. 
- Ability to smell and detect burning materials, natural gas, hazardous substances 
  such as solvents and toxic substances found in hazardous 
  wastes. 
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision. 
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 
- Ability to complete reports in legible handwriting. 

Both:
-Undergoes random drug and/or alcohol testing with satisfactory results subject to DOT and company requirements;
-Required to wear safety shoes;
-May need to possess, or acquire within a reasonable amount of time, a commercial driver's license depending on specific job duties;
-May be required to obtain and maintain medical clearance to operate DOT-regulated vehicle depending on specific job duties;
-May be required to obtain and maintain medical clearance for working with hazardous materials depending on specific job duties;
-May be required to obtain and maintain medical clearance to wear a respirator and be able to wear respirator as evidenced by satisfactory completion of respirator fit test depending on specific job duties;
-Comply with OSHA annual audiometric testing requirements;
-May be required to become DOT operator-qualified while working in the position depending on specific job duties;
-Must possess a valid operator's license for the size and type of vehicle that will be driven on the job;
-Must have an acceptable driving record;
-Selected applicant will be required to pass physical evaluation prior to hire.
-Selected applicant may be required to pass written and skills evaluations as required for this position prior to receiving promotion.

High School Graduate, GED

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Other Working Conditions

Will be required to work on call, rotating shifts, overtime, weekends and holidays.  Requires working in extreme cold or hot temperatures.  Requires working on uneven or slippery surfaces.  Required to wear safety shoes.  Some areas involve a 4/10-hour day work week.  Involves work around live gas.  Exposure to non-ionizing radiation from welding, flashes and sunburns.  May involve close eye contact work.  May require long periods of standing or walking.  Out-of-town work and overnight stays will be required in some departments.
