Underground Mine Manager

Our client is a large, growing multinational industrial mineral mining company with significant assets all over the world. This role is located in Wyoming and requires relocation.


The Underground Mine Manager represents an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership role within a rapidly growing mining company. The UG Mine Manager will be a member of the leadership team with specific operational leadership responsibility for the company’s underground mine and its 150+ employees.



The UG Mine Manager will report to the Head of Operations who reports to the CEO of the US division. This role will be directly responsible for leading a team of more than 150 employees.



• Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct all mine production and maintenance activities daily in a manner consistent with environmental, health, and safety values.

• Interface frequently and effectively with employees at all levels of the operation. Create and maintain open formal and informal lines of communication.

• Lead development of production targets and ensure production targets are met or exceeded through well planned and safe practices.

• Develop long range mining plans in accordance with the mine and company’s overall strategic plans. Ensure all departments and employees understand and are aligned regarding short and long-term business objectives.

• Effectively execute mine plans as established. Ensure proactive and immediate communication on any deviation from the plan, complete with an action plan to ensure production consistency.

• Proactively plan for and communicate both planned for and unexpected downtime (loss of production) and complete necessary root cause analysis to ensure ongoing downtime does not occur.

• Lead a continuous improvement and lean manufacturing culture and practices, driving improved efficiencies in staff utilization, production, and revenue performance.

• Manage annual budget of approximately $11MM in labor with sustaining capital budget of $10MM. • Lead the execution of the mine’s environmental, health and safety plan. Ensure underground mining activities are conducted in accordance with all federal and state regulations and environmental standards.

• Oversee and implement all MSHA regulatory compliance activities as required. Interface with federal and state regulatory agencies as required.

• Develop schedules, budget, and capital expenditure proposals to ensure effective and optimized ongoing operation.

• Manage planning, design, and scheduling of ongoing production activities.

• Maintain effective working relationships with contractors, suppliers, and service providers; ensure adherence to contractual requirements.

• Develop a culture of continuous improvement and ensure appropriate training programs are in place to meet safety and production requirements.

• Maintain current knowledge of statutory requirements and industry best practices to ensure compliance at all times.

• Provide leadership development and coaching to mine management teams, specifically with the intention of creating upward mobility for individuals within the organization.


KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS (within the first twelve months in this position)

• Develop a detailed understanding of company’s corporate culture, people, systems, and the underground operations. Establish strong leadership credibility, confidence, and rapport with the workforce, mine management and corporate teams.

• Achieve all production targets for the underground mine, including leading preparation and planning for the expansion efforts set to commence production in 2021.

• Maintain and continue to build on the mine’s strict safety culture and improve overall safety performance.


• A B.S. degree in Mining Engineering or closely related discipline is required. An advanced degree in business or engineering is preferred.

• A minimum of 10 years progressive operational/management experience of which at least 5 years should be in underground operations is required. Experience in room & pillar mining method is preferred.

• Proven success and demonstrated track record of leading a strong culture of mine safety is required.

• The ability to establish, communicate and measure aggressive results regarding safety, productivity, continuous improvement, and sound business practices is required.

• Demonstrated ability to build and develop a strong team and positive working relationships with a diverse workforce is required.

• An exemplary safety, performance, and attendance record is required.

• Able to prepare and present reports to all levels of the organization in an accurate and understandable format is required.

• Some travel and extended hours may be required.
