Who We're Looking For - Senior Director of Email & Audience Development

Do you have a successful track record in digital audience development and subscriptions? Have you led a high-performance team? Are you a master of developing products and audiences for email, SMS, and online communities?

The Penny Hoarder is seeking a director of email /audience membership development to build and lead a team responsible for growing this vital part of our business. We have 1.1 million email newsletter subscribers and see an opportunity to keep expanding readers and revenue. You’ll have a team of several people under you, as well as a close relationship with the editorial team and sales team.

What You'll Do

  • Establish and grow content partnerships to drive an engaged and valuable audience
  • Create and lead digital marketing campaigns and manage campaign budgets
  • Manage relationships and conduct analyses with digital platform partners
  • Develop strategies and tactics to reach and exceed our membership goals, with a focus on increasing newsletter engagement and traffic back to our website
  • Drive strategy for subscriber acquisition, while also focusing on retention of new and long-time subscribers
  • Utilize email and website analytics to identify untapped areas for growth
  • Works closely with editors to coordinate email content and work with the editorial team to create copy that is effective for the newsletter community(s)
  • Leads a team, mentoring and motivating them to their best performances
  • Collaborates with revenue/sales team to best monetize existing and new membership products
  • Effectively communicates strategy, initiatives, and progress to both team members and leadership
  • Develop a team of Audience and Industry marketers and create an environment for success, including hiring, mentorship, and performance management.

What You Need

  • 6 - 8+ years proven experience managing a digital audience development team focused on subscriber acquisition and engagement.
  • Strong understanding of SMS and/or push alerts
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Experience growing an online community and managing user-generated content
  • Experience using email marketing platforms - Iterable a plus
  • Strong digital analytics skills having used GA and other martech data visualization tools
  • Encourages others to have a positive demeanor and helps create a positive working environment as a role model. Develops trainings for others on the team; eager to share skills and lessons learned
  • Often seeks out feedback as a way to continue growing in their career
  • Swiftly identifies and acts on opportunities to help the team gain efficiencies
