Position Summary
Work in conjunction with the Children’s Services Coordinator to oversee and lead the drop-in child care classroom for children ages 6 weeks 5 years living in the Emergency Shelter and KRH Transitional Housing Program. Develop, plan and implement educational and play-oriented child care and behavioral management to ensure the health, safety, and enrichment of participating children.  Promote program excellence and accountability in all services and activities. Provide guidance, support, and team building opportunities that ensure drop-in child care staff understand and support YWCA mission, vision and values, and strategic goals; are knowledgeable about program related issues; are responsive to changing participant needs; and demonstrably increase awareness of the issues related to the effects of domestic abuse and family violence on children.
Essential Job functions

  1. Plan, implement and supervise infant/toddler/preschooler stimulation and educational activities in order to enhance their emotional and physical growth.
  2. Provide developmentally appropriate care, comfort, nurturing and guidance to infants/toddlers/preschoolers in order to enhance their emotional and physical growth. 
  3. Assist children with acquisition of age-appropriate social skills.
  4. Facilitate the development of responsibility, self-regulation, and self-control in children using approved guidance and discipline techniques. 
  5. Develop and monitor appropriate behavioral goals and contracts.
  6. Assess children’s needs, create appropriate behavioral plans, and assist children in meeting needs based on individual behavior plans.  
  7. Work closely with moms and child advocates to maintain and work towards child’s behavioral plan.
  8. Supervise and implement appropriate feeding schedules and individual maintenance requirements.
  9. Ensure the cleanliness, orderliness, and safety of facility according with health and hygiene standards, including but not limited to the toileting area, toys, cots, sheets, diaper changing area and food service/preparation area.
  10. Work with teaching team to create and maintain a cheerful, aesthetically pleasing child care environment that reflects the cultural diversity and interests of the children.
  11. Train and lead assistant teachers and volunteers in their assigned duties assuring their time is spent in appropriate and meaningful interaction with children and/or preparation of lesson materials. 
  12. Responsible for accurate record keeping, data collection, and anecdotal child reports in order to ensure coordinated departmental interventions.
  13. Monitor emotional and physical health of children, report all cases of suspected child abuse and respond to emergencies as needed in order to protect children.
  14. Prepare materials needed for daily lesson plans, and alert director when supplies are running low or when toys or equipment are in need of repair. 
  15. Communicate with parent and child as needed to resolve concerns or complaints and provide information regarding their child’s progress and behavior while in the program.
  16. Report to Children’s Services Coordinator, and VP of Children’s Services any parent or child concerns or complaints, suspicions of child abuse/neglect, extreme acting out behaviors, health and safety concerns, or other individual or group problems.
  17. Attend clinical staff meetings, monthly children’s services staff meetings, training sessions, and maintain communication with co-workers.

  5. Keep all records necessary to ensure that work is conducted in accordance with agency, contractual, and legal requirements.  Records are expected to be complete, accurate, and timely.
  6. Satisfactorily perform all duties outlined in this job description.
  7. Maintain all certifications and licensing related to role, program licensing, and grant standards including but not limited to: CPR, First Aid, Food Handlers Permit, CDA, MSW, SSW, or other license or degree, etc.

Ideal candidates will have the following:

  3. Understanding of equity, anti-oppression and trauma-informed philosophies.
Minimum qualifications include a combined [LO1]  or more years of education and experience:
  • 18 years of age.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience working with children ages 0-5 and experience working in child care settings preferred.
  • Current Child Development Associate certificate required or be willing to obtain a CDA within a year.   
  • An understanding of, and agreement with, YWCA Utah’s mission, values and philosophy regarding the elimination of racism, empowerment of women and commitment to anti-oppression work and social justice.
  • Understanding and commitment to issues of cultural diversity and anti-racism.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours on a regular basis, some evenings may be required.
  • Proficiency with general office duties, computer systems and technology.
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time, evaluate progress, and adjust activities to complete projects within established timeframe.
  • Demonstrated experience functioning within multidisciplinary settings.
  • Skilled in establishing effective working relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate and invite collaboration.
  • Able to demonstrate skills in effective communication, conflict resolution and problem solving.
  • If driving on business, a valid Utah driver’s license, access to an automobile, and valid auto insurance required.
Physical/Sensory Demands
Work is generally performed in a safe and comfortable office environment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:  sit for long periods of time; use computer to enter data; use telephone to converse with customers and employees; walk and stand for long periods of time; perform repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.  Travel to attend conferences, training, outreach and other events occurs routinely.
