Primary Function of Position
As the Kitchen Assistant, you will support the preparation and serving of meals at St. Vincent de Paul Center while maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen. Your role will ensure adherence to food safety guidelines and assist with inventory management.
Major Position Responsibilities
- Meal Preparation: Assist the Kitchen Manager and staff in preparing and planning meals, including preparing ingredients and meals according to established recipes and dietary guidelines.
- Donation Management: Inform the Kitchen Manager of incoming donations and assist with inventory management, including receiving and storing food supplies.
- Food Rotation: Assist in keeping food commodities on a first in and first out system to rotate products effectively.
- Team Collaboration: Exercise a team effort with both staff and volunteers.
- Kitchen Maintenance: Help maintain the cleanliness of the general kitchen area and equipment, including washing dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment.
- Reporting Issues: Report any kitchen or equipment problems to the Kitchen Manager or Lead Cooks.
- Safety Compliance: Follow food safety and sanitation procedures, including proper storage of food items and handling allergens.
- Client Interaction: Engage positively with clients and direct them to the correct staff member.
- Meeting Attendance: Attend and contribute to staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
- The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, subject to varying temperatures. It may require caution in slippery conditions.
- When operating equipment, you will work with personal protective equipment, including ear protection.
- You'll be close to hot equipment and sharp objects within the kitchen.
Physical Demands
- This role involves extended periods of standing, safely lifting and moving objects weighing up to 100 lbs.

- Food Preparation: Experience in food preparation of large quantities of food.
- Nutritional Planning: Experience in nutritional meal planning.
- Creativity: Imagination and flexibility in food preparation.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to get along with people, particularly with volunteers.
- Problem Solving: Ability to approach problem situations with tact and sensitivity.
- Personal Qualities: Personal qualities of openness and respect for co-workers and clients, compassion, and graciousness in helping clients to assess and face their situations and to accept assistance.
Education, Training, and Experience
- High School or equivalent experience.
- Three years industrial food preparation preferred.
Background Screening Requirement
- Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.
Licenses, certifications, and credentials
- Maintain a current Food Handler's Permit or ServSafe certification.
Position status and expected schedule
- This position is scheduled to work Sunday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with Friday and Saturday off.
